Basic Obedience

Basic or beginner’s obedience is typically a short course ranging from six to ten weeks, where it is demonstrated to the handler how to communicate with and train the dog in a few simple commands. With most methods the dog is trained one command at a time. Though there may or may not be a specific word attached to it, walking properly on a leash, or leash control, is often the first training required prior to learning other commands.

Basic commands

  • SitThe dog is in a sitting position
  • DownA dog is typically down when its elbows (front feet) and hocks (rear legs) are touching the ground or floor.
  • HeelThe dog’s head or shoulder is parallel to the handler’s leg on the left side of the handler.
  • Come“Call your dog” equals “come” or “here”
  • StayThe dog must remain in the position and location under which the command was given until it is released.

Advanced Obedience

Advanced Obedience Training is designed for those who have successfully completed Basic Obedience training or that have demonstrated mastery of the simple commands described in basic training. Advanced training places a huge emphasize on building increased control of off-leash work, hand signals and agility training. Usually, Iron Will Dog Training will hold four-week sessions, each week builds on the prior week’s activities.

Examples of Advanced commands

  • PlaceThe dog is trained to go to a certain place and stay there until released.
  • StandDog stands still, rising to all fours from a sitting or lying position
  • Leave ItDirecting the dog to not touch an item.
  • Hand SignalsDog will learn the hand signals of all the basic commands

Problem Solving

Certain breeds have reputations as being easier to train than others. Dogs that have been bred to perform one task to the exclusion of all others, or that have been bred to work independently from their handler, may be particularly challenging with obedience training.

Dog intelligence is exhibited in many different ways, and a dog that might not be easy to train might nonetheless be quite adept at figuring out how to open kitchen cabinets or to escape from the yard. Novice dog owners need to consider a dog’s trainability as well as its energy level, exercise requirements, and other factors before choosing a new pet. Dogs can require extensive daily mental stimulation if they are not to become bored and destructive.

No breed is impossible to obedience train. Jumping, excessive barking, aggression, resource guarding or any unwanted behavior are characterixtics of dogs that will benefit from problem solving.

Personal Protection

Personal Protection Training is designed to teach your own dog how to defend you on command. This program teaches them the art of controlled defense work. A qualified dog will learn to discourage an intruder (command bark), and build on that bark as the intruder approaches closer, and when commanded, bite the intruder with a powerful full mouth bite. This program also teaches the handler how to handle this new weapon, as well as the legalities of using lethal force.

After serving in the military I decided to turn my passion into a profession. This was inspired not only by my love for animals, but also by experiencing the bond shared between pets and owners.
